"No Spring Chickens!"

40+ Martial Arts Training.  Are you still kicking?!? Good. You're exactly who this program was built for. "No Spring Chickens!" is not about pretending you're 20 again. It's about training smarter, moving better, staying strong, and enjoying the process with people who understand that life after 40 comes with experience, responsibilities... and sometimes a few extra creaks and pops. At SGRO Martial Arts, we believe one size does not fit all. Some people want self-defense. Some want exercise. Some miss the challenge and excitement of training. Some want to improve mobility and balance. Some want to learn stick fighting and Filipino martial arts. Some simply want to get off the couch and be around good people. That is exactly why No Spring Chickens was designed differently. You do not have to become a cage fighter. You do not have to roll around on the floor for an hour. You do not have to become a kicking machine. Train for your goals. Move at your pace. Learn what works for you. Our atmosphere is relaxed, encouraging, and fun. We train seriously, but we do not take ourselves too seriously. "We're Still Kicking!"

Proven Experience and Real-World Roots

David Sgro served as a contracted combative instructor from 2000–2009 teaching military personnel before and after 9/11.
Training included: • U.S. Army Special Forces (Green Berets)
• 82nd Airborne Division
• Civil Affairs (CA)
• Psychological Operations (PSYOP)
• Military Police and support units Over 1,400 soldiers were trained in: • Striking
• Joint locks
• Ground fighting
• Filipino Martial Arts (stick and knife)
• Close-quarter combat skills
The civilian version of that experience evolved into SGRO Ju Jitsu Kali.

Five Areas of Training

Like a college student taking core classes before selecting a major, students in No Spring Chickens are introduced to a broad foundation of skills and experiences. As you move through the belt system, you develop a working understanding of all areas of combat and self-defense. Along the way, many students naturally discover areas they enjoy more than others. The curriculum includes:

1. Striking
Learn punches, kicks, elbows, knees, movement, timing, and practical self-defense skills.

2. Takedowns & Throws
Learn how to stay standing, control distance, and safely take someone down when necessary.

3. Grappling
Learn practical ground skills designed around control, escapes, and real-world application.

4. Joint Locks, Arm Bars & Chokes
Learn leverage, positioning, and control rather than relying on strength.

5. Filipino Kali Stick & Blade Training
Develop coordination, flow, timing, weapon awareness, and practical self-defense skills.

As students advance, they often discover a passion for one area over another. Some love Kali. Others become fascinated with grappling. Some enjoy striking or control techniques. As you approach Black Belt level, students may choose to specialize and place greater emphasis on a preferred area during advanced study and Black Belt preparation. And yes — you can earn a legitimate Black Belt. This is not a watered-down "fitness class with belts attached." Students are expected to learn, grow, and demonstrate real skill and understanding. The difference is that we recognize adults learn differently and have different goals, bodies, and life experiences.

Training Smarter After 40

After 40, training changes.
We emphasize:
• Mobility and flexibility
• Balance and coordination
• Functional strength
• Self-defense awareness
• Injury reduction
• Practical skills
• Fun and camaraderie
The goal is not to prove something.
The goal is to stay active, stay capable, and keep improving.
