Silver Bears

You're a successful man, 40+.
You've achieved a lot in life, except for one thing — the Black Belt you've always wanted.

Here's the mindset behind Silver Bears: someone has to read the situation, weigh the threats, and decide which asset to deploy — and when. You train the assets — striking, ground fighting, joint locks, stick and blade work. You decide what gets deployed, and in what order.

Conceal carry? Then your first move might not be a strike — it might be the unarmed skill that clears distance and buys time to transition to the asset that actually ends the fight. There's no fixed sequence handed down from the front of the room. You read the situation. You deploy accordingly.
You are the Silver Bear.  The last line standing between what you love and value and what threatens it.

Your First Class: A Two-Hour Private Evaluation

Split in two: an interview and a training session. The interview covers your goals, experience, physical concerns, and what you want out of training — confidence, fitness, self-protection, or just moving and feeling better again. The training session gives you a real taste of Silver Bears. You'll leave with a written plan built around where you are and where you're headed.

Many want it. Few start. Fewer finish. The view from the mountain top — the Black Belt — is only for those who've earned it.

Real-World Roots, Smarter Training After 40

Silver Bears is built on practical martial arts rooted in effectiveness, not performance — designed for men who want to stay strong, capable, and confident as they age. Still kicking. Still improving. Still in control.
Five areas of training:
  1. Striking — punches, kicks, elbows, knees, timing, practical self-protection
  2. Takedowns & Throws — staying standing, controlling distance, safely taking someone down
  3. Grappling — ground control, escapes, real-world application
  4. Joint Locks, Arm Bars & Chokes — leverage and positioning over strength
  5. Filipino Kali Stick & Blade — coordination, flow, weapon awareness
Every area builds the same foundation: mobility, balance, functional strength, and calm under pressure. As you advance, you'll gravitate toward certain areas — the standard doesn't move, but the pace and path are built around you.

Every program is individually designed and self-paced, starting at your current level. Bring a partner, or we'll help you find one. Returning after years away or starting fresh — the system adapts to you.

Mature Training for a Mature Fighter

After 40, training changes. The goal isn't to prove something — it's to stay strong, sharp, and capable.
"Silver Bear" isn't just a name. It's a mindset that matures with you. And the smart Silver Bear knows his training has to mature too.
Self-defense is a perishable skill — it fades without maintenance, and demands attitude as much as reps.
You're not done. You're still moving, still learning, still kicking.

Proven Experience, Real-World Roots

I taught this same principle to Special Forces Soldiers as a contracted Combatives Instructor for 2/3 SFG (A), 2000–2006, before and after 9/11 — one of the highest honors of my career. I was en route to finalize that contract with LTC Ed Reeder when the Pentagon was hit.

I developed the Plan of Instruction for F.I.G.H.T. C.U.T. (Fully Integrated Grappling & Hitting Techniques, Close Up Techniques), then built the pipeline that took it 82nd ABN  USCAPOC, and MP Units — over 1,400 soldiers certified, who then trained 14,000 more in striking, joint locks, ground fighting, and close-quarter combat.

My job was never to hand a soldier one "correct" answer. It was to teach him every asset and trust him to deploy them his way, based on what he read in front of him. He made the call — I made sure he had a full army to work with.

The civilian version of that experience became the Silver Bears.

No Experience Required

No previous martial arts experience is necessary.
We start exactly where you are today and build from there—step by step—so you can train safely, intelligently, and with confidence at any age.

Busy? Tired? Too old?
Everyone's got an excuse, except Silver Bears.
They don't use one. They get it done.

Are you the Silver Bear?
Train to be ready, because the predators do.
